Carbonia
Carbonia was inaugurated in 1938 (planned in 1936) to serve the needs of a coal mine (carbone = coal). The original plan was to build a town for 15,000 inhabitants, resettled from other poor areas of Italy.
Very soon the limit was raised to 50,000 inhabitants, which was reached in 1949.After the Second World War, Italy began to import cheaper coal, which led to the closure of the mine in the 1970s and emigration. Instead, a new industrial zone was created nearby, where aluminium is still produced today.
In the 1990s, the Carbonia Landscape Machine project began to restore the town and turn the mine into a museum, which also hosts a film festival.
