Eisenhuttenstadt

The town was founded in 1950 and named Stalinstadt, located in eastern Germany on the Oder River on the border with Poland. It was was built according to the 16 principles of urban planning, according to which all new cities in the German Democratic Republic were built. After Stalin's death in 1961, the city was renamed Eisenhüttenstadt - literally, the Iron City. After the fall of the Wall, the steelworks - like most of the state infrastructure - were privatised and most of the 12,000 employees were laid off. At its peak in 1988, the town had 53,000 inhabitants; today the number has fallen to 23,000. The former kindergarten (last photo) houses a museum of everyday life in the GDR.
