Monument to the Millennium of Gorizia and Solkan
The Monument to the Millennium of Gorizia and Solkan, created by sculptor Marko Pogačnik, has stood on the edge of the city lawn since 2001. The split stone monolith, shaped like an open book, marks a key historical moment—the first written mention of Solkan and Gorizia.
The left half of the karst stone bears an inscription of the donation charter of Holy Roman Emperor Otto III from the year 1001, in which the two places are first mentioned. The right half features a vital energy symbol—a cosmogram of Gorizia derived from the motif of a rose.
Marko Pogačnik is the author of numerous lithopuncture projects, intended to stimulate processes of “healing” the earth and balancing the surrounding space. In the same year, he also created a lithopuncture pillar with a cosmogram, located behind the branch of the Milojka Štrukelj Primary School in Ledine.
